Coppin State University’s men’s basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit to secure a 53-51 victory against Delaware State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener on Saturday at Memorial Hall. With this win, Coppin State improved its season record to 3-15, while Delaware State dropped to 5-11.
Taj Thweatt led all scorers with 13 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field and making three shots from beyond the arc. Freshman Nelson Lamizana contributed ten points, including two three-pointers. Hussain Williams and Jamari Piercy each scored eight points for Coppin State, while Chris Morgan added seven points along with six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Williams and Morgan shared team-high rebounding honors with six boards apiece.
The Eagles made seven three-pointers during the game and limited Delaware State to 36.8 percent shooting from the floor. Coppin State shot 40.8 percent overall.
In the closing minutes of regulation, Coppin trailed by three points before Khali Horton tied the game with a three-pointer. Thweatt gave Coppin the lead after tipping in a missed shot with less than two minutes remaining. Delaware State closed the gap to one point but Piercy’s layup extended Coppin’s advantage with just 24 seconds left.
Delaware State was unable to capitalize on free throw opportunities following a quick foul by Coppin State. After a missed shot by Coppin, Morgan blocked a potential tying three-pointer, secured the rebound, and converted one free throw in the final seconds to ensure his team’s win.
Coppin State will next play at home against NC Central on Saturday, January 10 at 4:30 pm in a game scheduled for broadcast on ESPN+.
