Kweisi Mfume, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 7th district since 2020, addressed a range of issues in recent social media posts, including Labor Day observances, meetings with survivors of abuse, and public safety in Baltimore.
On September 1, 2025, Mfume marked the national holiday by stating: “This Labor Day, we honor the achievements of organized labor, from safer working conditions to the 40-hour work week, and celebrate their vital role in strengthening our middle class for a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous nation. Two days later on September 3, he shared details about his engagement with victims of high-profile abuse cases: “Earlier today, I spent 2.5 hours meeting with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s abuse. Most of the victims were exploited at 13, 14 and 15 years of age, deceived by promises of a college education, a job, or threats of harm to their family members.”
Later that same day on September 3, Mfume announced actions regarding federal intervention in Baltimore: “Today, I sent a letter with @RepJohnnyO urging Trump to reconsider the proposed deployment of federal troops to Baltimore. The reality is—Baltimore is the safest it has ever been in over 50 years. Thanks to local initiatives championed by @MayorBMScott in coordination with”
Mfume has represented Maryland’s 7th district since replacing Elijah Cummings in Congress in 2020 and previously served in the Maryland House of Representatives from 1987 to 1996. Born in Baltimore in 1948 and currently residing there at age 74, he is an alumnus of Morgan State University.
