Loyola University Maryland’s men’s and women’s rowing teams competed against Washington College and St. Mary’s College of Maryland on April 4, posting several wins on the St. Mary’s River.
The event saw the Greyhounds men’s team sweep all four races in which they participated, while the women’s team finished first in two out of three events.
In the women’s competition, Loyola’s first varsity eight (1V8) placed second out of three crews with a time of 6:55.23. The lineup included coxswain Evan Ellsworth along with Josephine Lightner, Mikayla Smith, Mary Cate Burger, Bella Taranto, Beata Turnquist, Valentina Masi, Bella Guarnaccia, and Emily Luttman. The second varsity eight (2V8), led by coxswain Autumn Plummer and crew members Molly Gum, Kennedy Courtney, Grace John, Arianna Grisanti, Marley Vallino, Victoria Kolawa, Ava Oliveria and Grace Brandenburg secured first place among two boats with a time of 7:18.18.
The women’s first varsity four (1V4), featuring coxswain Bella Schafer alongside Eiley Depman, Cass Garcia, Brynn Ropelewski and Cassidy Richard won their race against three other boats in a time of 8:10.32. In the same race category for fours (2V4), Addison Grubka served as coxswain with Heidi Wagner, Catherine Petrozzini, Anne Koehler and Molly Collins finishing second out of four at 8:14.59.
On the men’s side for eights racing over three entries each time: Josephine Sedgley was coxswain for both the first varsity eight (1V8)—with Pete Bohacek; Patrick Tonna; Brendan Shaw; Gabe Wagner; Jeremiah James; Ethan Shelley; Joseph Fontanilla; Chris Engelbert—who won in 6:03.25—and also for the first varsity four (1V4) that finished atop their field at 6:39.30 with Shaw again joined by Wagner as well as Fontanilla and Engelbert.
Other men’s results included Ariel Ellis leading Loyola’s second varsity eight to victory among two crews at 6:31.09 together with Troy Guillen; Connor Williams; Jack Tartamosa; Nico Del Pozzo; Miles Steinberg; Liam Van Es; Jake Cordes and Sebastian Sencion while Lana Mihelcic was coxswain for a winning second varsity four that clocked in at 7:03.21 alongside Sean Mullaly; George Bannon; Jaxson Dannible and Sam Crowe.
The strong performance by both Loyola squads highlights their competitiveness early in the spring season.
