Khila Morris set new personal records with 26 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Coppin State women’s basketball team secure a narrow 60-59 win over Delaware State in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener on Saturday at Memorial Hall. The victory brings both teams to a 3-13 record for the season.
Morris, a senior from Bronx, New York, scored the decisive basket with just under seven seconds remaining. She finished the game shooting 11-of-23 from the field, including one three-pointer and making all three of her free throws. Morris also contributed three steals.
No other Coppin State player reached double digits in scoring. Erin Henry added nine points, while Sydney Burris recorded seven points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Shanaii Gamble and Patricia Sosa Lora each collected eight rebounds. Paris McBride contributed six points, four rebounds, and led the team with four assists.
Despite being outshot by Delaware State—33.3% to Coppin’s 28.8%—the Eagles held a significant advantage in rebounding, pulling down 51 boards compared to Delaware State’s 29. This edge led to 13 second-chance points for Coppin State. The Eagles also forced 21 turnovers and converted 19 of their 23 free throw attempts.
Coppin State led after the first quarter but trailed at halftime as Delaware State surged ahead in the second period. The Eagles regained momentum in the third quarter before Delaware State tied it up heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Morris scored consecutive layups to give Coppin a five-point lead early on. Jahcelyn Hartfield extended that lead with two free throws following a turnover by Delaware State. However, Delaware State responded and took back the lead late in the game.
A key defensive play came when Burris blocked a Hornets layup attempt and secured the rebound with less than 20 seconds left on the clock. After calling timeout, Coppin State set up for what became Morris’s game-winning drive to the basket.
Coppin State will next play against NC Central at home on Thursday, January 8 at 7 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
