The Loyola University Maryland men’s tennis team lost to Navy 7-0 on April 4 at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis, Maryland.
This result is significant for both teams’ standings in the Patriot League, as Navy improved its conference record while Loyola continued to search for its first league win of the season.
Navy swept all six singles matches. Herrick Legaspi won against Petter Hagen at No. 1 singles with scores of 7-5, 6-4. Charlie Spencer defeated Louis Moldenhauer at No. 2 with a score of 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, Tommy Kim came from behind to beat Blake Edwards, finishing with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-0, and then winning the deciding tiebreaker set by ten points to three. J.J. Etterbeek secured a win over Ryan Gill at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2), Steve Nguyen defeated Nick Lawliss at No.5 (7-5, 6-0), and George Cutone completed singles play by beating Alejandro Rotundo without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles competition, Navy claimed two completed matches to secure the doubles point early in the contest. The pairing of J.J. Etterbeek and Tommy Kim won against Petter Hagen and Louis Moldenhauer (6-2) at No.2 doubles while George Cutone and Steve Nguyen overcame Dylan Koziol and Cyrus Shivkumar (6-1) at No.3 doubles position.
The top doubles match between Herrick Legaspi/Charlie Spencer and Ryan Gill/Nick Lawliss was left unfinished with Navy leading by two games.
With this loss Loyola moved to an overall record of one win and thirteen losses for the season and remained winless in five league matches so far; Navy’s record improved to nineteen wins and seventeen losses overall along with two victories out of three conference matches.
