Oku finishes second in 400m dash at MEAC Outdoor Championships

Gifty Oku finished second in the 400-meter dash and scored in three other events for the Coppin State women’s track and field team at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships, according to a May 17 announcement. The event was hosted by Norfolk State over the weekend, with Coppin State finishing eighth in the team standings with a total of 20 points.

Oku recorded a time of 55.18 seconds in the 400-meter dash to claim second place, while her teammate Danielle Wooten also contributed by finishing seventh with a time of 56.62 seconds. Oku added to her performance by placing seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.39 seconds and helped both relay teams: she ran legs on the fourth-place finishing 4×100 meter relay (45.83) and on the seventh-place finishing 4×400 meter relay (4:07.13). Wooten, Kyah La Fortune, and Benidicta Kwartemaa also participated on both relays.

Kwartemaa scored one point for Coppin State after running an 11.92-second final in the 100-meter dash following an earlier prelims run of 11.69 seconds. She also competed in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 24.57 seconds just ahead of La Fortune’s finish at 25.17 seconds.

In hurdles competition, Karima Davenport-White led three Eagles athletes in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.25 seconds; Ariell Thomas followed at 15.43 and Paula Orusede finished at16.46 seconds respectively.

Coppin’s field event highlights included Raniya Perry achieving a personal best throw of11.08 meters (36-4¼) in shot put; she also threw discus for28.04 meters (92-0). Blair Griffith competed as well, throwing9.85 meters(32-3¾)in shot putand31.48 meters(103-3)in hammer throw.

In long jump action, Zeana Bain led teammates witha leapof5 .18meters(17 -0), followedby Indya Normanat5 .10meters(16 -8¾). Dream Wilson rounded out field performanceswithashotputthrowof7 .09meters(23 -3¼).

The results reflect individual efforts across sprints , relays , jumps ,and throws that contributedtoCoppinState’sfinalteamstanding.
