Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Feb. 27.
LEGISLATIVE ALERT: Sales Tax Increase
House Bill 1628 would expand the state sales tax to include services. This means that legal, accounting, realtor and home improvement services, gym memberships and auto services, just to name a few, would be taxed. The purpose of the tax increase is to fund the recommendations of the Kirwan Commission. Here are five major problems with this bill:
1. Penalizes small businesses and the Gig Economy.
2. Double taxation.
3. Puts Maryland at a competitive disadvantage
4. Impact on Lower Income Individuals.
5. Difficult to enforce.
HB 1628 would result in a massive tax increase of $2.6 billion, the largest single tax increase in Maryland history. The new tax would force businesses to pass along this new tax to their customers. This will not only increase costs but create additional reporting requirements for business owners. Click HERE for more details.
