Three exhibitions focusing on animals will soon be showcased at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. The exhibitions explore how animals have been represented in art across different cultures and time periods. "Paws on Parchment" will open on August 6, 2025, followed by "Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt" on September 27, 2025, and "Art From Wildlife" on November 5, 2026.
The museum's Chief Curator Ani Proser highlighted the enduring but fragile presence of animals in human lives. "The dynamic between humans and animals is varied," she said. The first exhibition, "Paws on Parchment," will display medieval manuscripts featuring cats and will run until February 15, 2026. Lynley Anne Herbert explained that cats were both beloved pets and functional hunters during the medieval era.
"Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt," organized by the Brooklyn Museum, delves into animal mummification practices from September 27, 2025, to January 11, 2026. Lisa Anderson-Zhu emphasized its relevance to existing exhibits at the Walters Art Museum.
Lastly, "Art From Wildlife" examines luxury goods made from rare materials like kingfisher feathers and elephant ivory. Dany Chan stated that this exhibition addresses visitor questions about these materials' historical appeal and impact.
The Walters Art Museum offers free admission thanks to support from various donors and organizations.
