Kweisi Mfume addresses legislation honoring Jordan McNair and DOJ recommendation for Brett Hankison

Kweisi Mfume, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 7th district, has recently posted a series of statements on his official social media account addressing issues ranging from legislative action in honor of student athletes to criminal justice and international leadership.

On July 17, 2025, Mfume highlighted legislative efforts related to athlete safety: "In honor of the late Jordan McNair, a freshman on the University of Maryland football team who collapsed from heatstroke during practice on May 29, 2018, I reintroduced the Jordan McNair Student Athlete Heat Fatality Prevention Act along with @Sen_Alsobrooks, and with the support https://t.co/t7DKVHM7KX". The bill is named after Jordan McNair, who died following a heatstroke during football practice in 2018.

The following day, July 18, Mfume commented on a recent recommendation by the U.S. Department of Justice concerning Brett Hankison: "In a sad display of blatant racism, the U.S. Department of Justice is recommending only ONE day in prison as punishment for Brett Hankison—one of the detectives involved in the tragic and senseless killing of innocent Breonna Taylor, shot dead in cold-blood in her home, in 2020,". Breonna Taylor was killed during a police raid at her home in Louisville, Kentucky in March 2020.

On July 19, Mfume reflected on Nelson Mandela’s legacy: "Nelson Mandela was a fearless visionary and an unwavering champion of justice who had the moral courage to fight for a world rooted in equity and unity. Today and throughout the weekend, we honor his enduring legacy and the profound impact of his life’s work—especially as we face https://t.co/fn8JqZRkRV".

Mfume has represented Maryland's 7th District since replacing Elijah Cummings in Congress in 2020. He previously served from 1987 to 1996 as well. Born and raised in Baltimore in 1948 and currently residing there at age 74, Mfume is also an alumnus of Morgan State University.
