COPPIN STATE UNIVERSITY: Holds 118th Commencement

Coppin State University recently issued the following announcement.

Coppin State University will hold its 118th commencement exercises on Saturday, May 19, 2018. This year’s keynote speaker is noted author, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker, Stedman Graham.

Commencement will take place on Coppin State University’s campus, in the arena of the Physical Education Complex. More than 500 graduates will receive bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.

Mr. Graham was last on campus in October, when he kicked off a mentoring program with university president, Dr. Maria Thompson. Also taking part were CSU men’s basketball coach, Juan Dixon, and Kaiser Permanente representatives, vice president and business information officer, Michael O. Willis, and director of community health, Dr. Destiny-Simone Ramjohn.

The students that participated in the mentorship program, Identity, walked through a process where they were able to define their authentic self, identify skills for making important decisions and investigate academic and career options.

According to CSU President Maria Thompson, “Stedman Graham’s philosophy that individuals hold the power to their own educational and personal success is so impactful.”

Coppin State will hold morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies. The College of Arts, and Science and Education and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will commence at 10:00 a.m. The College of Business and the College of Health Professions will commence at 3:00 p.m. Mr. Graham will speak at both ceremonies.

A number of special events are planned for this year’s commencement.

Three Coppin State Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Cadets will be formally commissioned. Lieutenant Colonel Willie Rodney, Professor of Military Science will administer the Oath to the candidates for Second Lieutenant.

Last year, the College of Health Professions historically awarded the university’s first doctoral degrees to Jennifer P. Pope and Khalilah Jefferson. This year, another 8 candidates are scheduled to receive their Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees, bringing the total number of doctoral graduates to ten.

Lastly, Coppin State alumni from the Class of 2008 and the Class of 1968; celebrating their 10 year and 50 year anniversary respectively, are invited and will be recognized during the commencement ceremonies.
