K12 schools stock 01

Baltimore City Public Schools issued the following announcement on June 14.

Baltimore City Public Schools will destroy the old special education records of all students who exited from special education services during the 2011-2012 school year. This process is part of the district’s annual document retention policy (EHB) and the Maryland Student Records Manual (per COMAR 13A.08.02.06). (Click here for the formal notice.)

Please note that City Schools will keep a permanent high school record of every student’s name, address, phone number, grades, attendance record, classes attended, grade level completed, and year completed.

Some educational records may be needed for social security benefits or other purposes. Former students or parents or legal guardians of former students may request an individual special education record before it is destroyed. To request a record, email SpecialEdRecordRequest@bcps.k12.md.us (with “IEP Request: 2011-2012” in the subject line) or call 443-984-2000. Requests must be made by Monday, July 16, 2018.

Please include the below information when making a request.

Student name, date of birth, last school of attendance, and approximate year of exit from special education

If the student is over 18, documentation that the student releases the information to his or her parent(s) or legal guardian(s)

Requested records must be picked up at the district office, and requestors must bring valid identification. Any special education records not claimed will be destroyed in accordance with state and federal regulations.

For more information, please call the Parent Response Team at 443-984-2000.
