Port Discovery issued the following announcement on June 19.
With your help, children who visit Port Discovery with big dreams can turn into parents who visit with dreams fulfilled!
When Devon was young, he lived in the Flag House Courts public housing. After school and in the summer, Devon and his friends would check into the library on Port Discovery Children’s Museum’s second floor, and as long as they didn’t cause a ruckus, they’d be permitted to spend time in the exhibits, too.
In those days Devon got hooked on Harry Potter, and found an oasis of joy and possibilities when he would walk to Port Discovery—a refuge from the dangerous and sometimes unhappy surroundings of the neighborhood where he grew up.
"Port Discovery was kind of like our Oasis. A lot of the neighborhood kids would come here, use the library, run around the Museum for a little but, and then go home. It was a good place to get off the street. It showed us a different side of life that wasn't all grim and dark and sad."
Fast forward two decades, and thanks to your support, we just celebrated our 5 millionth guest walking through our front doors. Five million opportunities to bring learning to life in new, fun ways.
Today, Devon and his wife have their own daughter that they bring to Port Discovery. They hope to spark for her the same curiosity and passion for learning that he found after school when he came as a child.
Because of you, children at Port Discovery are dreaming big.
Your donation today will help open our doors wider to the children of this community— give another young Devon a brighter future.
Will you donate today to help us reach our goal by the fiscal year end on June 30th?
