Like all floating historic ships, the challenges of preserving the US Coast Guard Cutter TANEY are tremendous. Unlike traditional museum exhibits displayed in controlled environments, USCGC TANEY is constantly exposed to the stresses of an actual marine environment. While the Depression-era workmanship which built the ship in the 1930s is truly exemplary, she is in need of periodic underwater hull maintenance to counteract the effects of weakened coatings and corrosion below her waterline. This kind of maintenance must be done in dry dock, and it is as costly as it is vital for the long term preservation of our maritime heritage.
