Baltimore City Public Schools issued the following announcement on Nov. 16.
Making the decision to close schools or delay opening because of bad weather is almost always difficult. Safety is our most important concern. However, we want to open schools whenever possible, so that students won’t miss important teaching and learning and can also get the meals and other resources they rely on. We also keep the needs of working parents in mind, for whom finding last-minute childcare is difficult and missing work is often not an option.
Our decision-making starts very early, with checks of roads and outside conditions as well as monitoring detailed weather forecasts. Today’s forecast for Baltimore City made things challenging, since it called for snow changing to rain by mid-morning. While that change-over is happening later than predicted, our weather forecasting service still expects it to happen prior to school dismissal. We have therefore decided to keep schools open until the regular dismissal time.
We know that today posed challenges for many of you, and many of you have shared your concerns. Parents and guardians, please know that you can keep your child at home if you feel that conditions in your neighborhood are not safe. Please also make sure that your school has your contact information on file, so that you can receive notifications if closures, delays, or early dismissals are announced. More information about our notification and decision-making procedures are available on our website at www.baltimorecityschools.org/weather.
Thank you for your patience and support.
