Anne Arundel County issued the following announcement on Feb. 3.

Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman today introduced Resolution 3-20 to acquire a 37.5 acre parcel of land near Odenton, Maryland. The property, located on 1127 Bragers Road, is slated to build a new elementary school and future recreational facilities.

Funding for the parcel was included in the fiscal year 2020 budget, as part of the Advance Land Acquisition fund, which is typically allocated to purchase land for schools or other essential county facilities. The parcel is located near the Two Rivers subdivision in Odenton. The county negotiated a price of $1,092,500 for the land, compared with the seller’s appraised value of $4,360,000.

“This area has seen a tremendous amount of growth and we must ensure our schools do not continue to be overcrowded,” said County Executive Steuart Pittman. “This acquisition will allow us to build a new school in this growing area and provide much-needed recreational uses for the community.”

Since the land will be purchased using Advance Land Acquisition funds, the county conducted a feasibility study as required by code. The study was submitted along with Resolution 3-20 and considers the zoning, soils, topography and other physical characteristics of the site. The study recommends a 600-student school and future recreational uses. A conceptual diagram is included in the study.

Councilman Andrew Pruski (District 4) cosponsored the resolution.

“The acquisition of this land parcel is a crucial first step in helping to alleviate overcrowding in the schools in West County,” said Councilman Pruski. “I look forward to working with the County Executive, my colleagues on the County Council, and the Board of Education to get a new school built as soon as possible.”
