On February 12, 2025, Mfume commemorated the 35th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison. He noted Mandela as "the embodiment of the struggle for liberation in South Africa" and expressed his enduring remembrance of Mandela's contributions to ending apartheid. "This week marks the 35th anniversary of when Nelson Mandela – a freedom fighter – was released after 27 years in prison during his movement to end apartheid in South Africa."

The following day, February 13, 2025, Mfume praised Erek Barron for his work as a U.S. attorney.
