University of Baltimore issued the following announcement on April 10.
The 2019 CityLit Festival, featuring globally recognized authors, publishers, editors and more in a day-long celebration of literature, will take place at the University of Baltimore on Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center (home of UB's Merrick School of Business), 11 W. Mt. Royal Ave. This partnership with UB's Klein Family School of Communications Design will feature more than 75 writers in 15 sessions, all free and open to the public.
Dani Shapiro, bestselling author of Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love, will serve as this year's keynote speaker. Shapiro will sit down for a conversation with author of Baltimore Book of the Dead and UB Associate Professor Marion Winik.
This year's master class is "Diving into Stage Writing: Dialogue and Drama," with novelist and playwright Kia Corthron. In this workshop, participants will be given exercises to help facilitate their undertaking of expressive speech and action inherent to the characters they've created. The cost of the master class is $10 and pre-registration is required.
The festival's featured literary guest artists are mystery author Angie Kim, who debuts Miracle Creek, a contemporary take on the courtroom drama, drawing on the author's own life as a Korean immigrant; former trial lawyer, and mother of a real-life "submarine" patient, and award-winning journalists Kenrya Rankin and Akiba Solomon, who will discuss the highly anticipated work How We Fight White Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance, a celebration and documentation of the unique and varied ways that black Americans across the country speak their truths with personal, uncompromising reflections.
In addition to the marquee events, the festival will comprise panel sessions—including a discussion on mass incarceration with UB student and author of The Master Plan, Chris Wilsonand several other authors—one-on-one writing critique sessions, and a literary marketplace featuring items for purchase and musical guests.
