Baltimore Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 26.
Media Release: Mayor Scott, Police Commissioner Harrison and MONSE respond to weekend crime Baltimore, Md. (January 25, 2022) –
From Friday, January 21, through Sunday, January 23, 2022, Baltimore City experienced six homicides, seven non-fatal shootings and 25 robberies.
Despite this intolerable level of crime and these unacceptable incidents, the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) was able to make 84 total arrests over the weekend, including 10 handgun arrests, fourrobbery arrests and three arrests for carjackings. Additionally, 64 warrants were issued in the same time span.
Amid these brazen, despicable acts, the BPD continues to do its job by aggressively and relentlessly pursuing these violent offenders. The Department works around the clock to solve these crimes, make arrests and improve the quality of life in our city.
“Baltimore, we must be better,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “The level of senseless violence occurring across our city is sickening. I met with police leadership Monday evening to ensure that we continue to focus and further our coordinated efforts on those who continue to carry out acts of violence in our city to reduce violent crime. We will continue to partner with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to bring all resources to bear in this fight for the safety of Baltimore City. But we cannot do this alone, and the police cannot solve this problem alone. It will take all of us, every single resident in Baltimore, rolling up their sleeves and getting in this fight to curb the current cycle of violence and bring about sustained reductions in violence across our city.”
The Baltimore Police Department continues to work with area law enforcement partners to increase visibility and with community organizations to identify and apprehend violent offenders.
“Those who commit these violent acts will be held accountable and we will use all resources at our disposal to ensure the safety of Baltimore residents. The violence must stop and we need everyone’s support to achieve sustainable reductions of violence in our city,” said Commissioner Michael Harrison. “I commend all the members of the Department for their dedication and sacrifice. They continue to show up every day to serve and protect our city.”
“We acknowledge that this has been a heavy start to 2022, with more than a dozen shootings this weekend. Many of these incidents have deeply hurt and traumatized our residents, neighborhoods and communities,” said Shantay Jackson, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement.
“MONSE, alongside Mayor Scott and BPD, will continue the work of implementing the Mayor’s violence prevention strategy with a focus on accountability and addressing the web of trauma every shooting and killing leaves behind.”
